Word of the Week

Word of the Week #17

Easter week has very much been about one word for us:

Word of the Week - Family

Hubby and I have both been off work, meaning the three of us have been able to spend our days together and we also got away for a mini-break in Southampton (you can read more about that here).

As well as that we had my mum and dad down for a lovely visit, which Little Miss thoroughly enjoyed. Nanny brought with her the best part of a new warm weather wardrobe for the little lady! It was a little bit excessive really but I can’t complain as I’d yet to get around to buying any summery things and it will save us a lot of money. Plus it clearly it makes my mum happy to spoil us a bit from time to time. Little Miss shamelessly stripped off in the living room to try her new gear on – although wearing one pair of shorts on your head while having both legs in a single leg hole of the other pair is a look that is unlikely to catch on!

We also enjoyed a big family gathering with my husband’s family, which these days involves no fewer than seven children aged six and under, including three two-year-old girls! Little Miss enjoyed playing in the garden with her cousins and unwrapping some lovely Easter presents.

The rest of the week has seen the three of us hanging out together. Little Miss enjoyed a swimming session with Daddy. It was her first time in a pool since last summer but after a tearful shaky start – when she was desperate to keep her socks on! – she loved it. She’s also the proud new owner of a Peppa Pig rubber ring.

We also had a trip with Granny and Grandad to the soft play facility in our local leisure centre. You need to be two to use it so it was Little Miss’s first time there and was another big hit.

Tomorrow it’s back to the work/nursery routine for the first half of the week – boo! But at least we have another long Bank Holiday weekend to look forward to – hooray!

Hope you’ve had a great week, whatever you’ve been up to!

Word of the Week #16

This time five years ago hubby and I were spending the night in a hotel near Gatwick Airport, recovering from the biggest event of our lives so far, our wedding the day before, and looking forward to jetting off on our wonderful honeymoon to Italy. So my Word of the Week has to be:

Word of the Week - AnniversaryActually the word has double significance as yesterday was not only our fifth wedding anniversary (wood apparently!) but it also saw me reach another slightly less important but none-the-less satisfying milestone, my six-month ‘blogiversary’. More on that another time though. Just to warn you, I may be about to get a little bit misty-eyed and emotional!

Our wedding day was simply amazing, spent celebrating just the way we wanted to with all our friends and family. By the end of it we both felt quite overwhelmed by the love and positivity that had surrounded the whole day. OK, so there had been the small hitch of the classic 1950’s car conking out on the way to the church! I ended up arriving late in the back of an old Ford Fiesta driven by a pair of unlikely heroes – two slightly scruffy but surprisingly helpful teenage lads! It might not have been ideal but it actually added a quirkiness to the day and we certainly didn’t let it spoil the mood. And we had the best party ever, in our opinion anyway!

I can remember it all so vividly but it also feels such a long time ago now. So much has happened over the last five years. We have so many happy memories, a few very difficult ones and, since Little Miss arrived two years ago, some truly amazing ones. My husband is a wonderful man, my best friend and a fantastic father. I really couldn’t ask for more. Here’s to the next five years and way, way beyond.

Word of the Week #15

My word this week feels a little bit dull but actually sometimes humdrum is ok and is what’s needed. After a busy few weeks, life has been pretty quiet and average round our parts but I’m fine with that. So my word for this week is:

Word of the Week - Routine

Unlike many, we’re not yet at the stage where Easter half-term holidays affect us so the first half of the week was work as normal for me while Little Miss was at nursery. We’re actually planning our little Easter mini-break for the week the schools go back so we can avoid any hideously inflated prices and the crowds.

So life has just ticked on pretty much as usual this week. Little Miss continues to say more and more, and to know her own mind more and more. She has also developed a nasty cough and very runny nose, another reason we’ve not been up to too much this weekend. Our one trip out yesterday morning saw a particularly epic coughing fit which ended in a puked on car seat. So we’ve had the joys of taking that apart to wash it all out and clean the covers. Thankfully it’s only the second time it’s happened and this bout was nowhere near as unpleasant as last time! Thank you to Super Hubby for tackling the worst of the ‘pooling’ while I got away with just putting the cover in the wash. This has got to be up there as one of the more unpleasant jobs of parenthood!

We’ve also been making thank you cards for her birthday presents. We’ve used some lovely photos from her birthday weekend for these and, when she wakes up from her nap, I’m hoping Little Miss will oblige us with some little scribbles on these! Having just said that, I can hear that she has indeed already woken up from her nap. A very short nap. Much, much shorter than Mummy was anticipating. Grrrr, I blame the blasted cough! Any advice for soothing a toddler cough would be very gratefully received!

From the banging on the bars of the cot and chatting it doesn’t sound like any more sleep is on her agenda so I’m on borrowed time here! Will have to hit publish, finish my only-just-brewed cup of tea, then dash. Good job I didn’t have anything wildly exciting to report on this week then!

Toddler says no!

Word of the Week #14

I’m told it happens to all parents but one of our toddler’s most uttered words at the moment is that dreaded two-letter one, usually accompanied by a whining tone. It’s…

Word of the Week - No

It seems our little girl increasingly knows her own mind and what she does and doesn’t want to do, and she now has absolutely no qualms about letting Mummy and Daddy know when something is not to her liking.

Sometimes there is logic to her negativity. When I say ‘aren’t you going to eat your cabbage?’ and the answer is ‘no’, it’s not really a massive surprise. I’m not a huge fan either but I can put on an Oscar-worthy performance of enjoying the much-maligned veg to try and encourage her to give it a go! Clearly my acting skills aren’t as convincing as I thought yet, somewhat irritatingly, her nursery has managed to come up with a vastly superior, magical cabbage recipe as apparently she willingly ate it there last week – grrrr!

Then there’s the illogical. She wants a biscuit. We offer her said biscuit. “NO!” She doesn’t want that one. But she’s quite willing to eat the next one in the packet. The same, identical biscuit!??? I’m not sure whether this was purely an act of toddler madness or a more cunning ploy on her part as we left the rejected biscuit laying on the side and  found her happily eating it about 20 minutes later!

Toddler says no!

The other phrase she’s recently adopted, that really takes the biscuit (no pun intended given the last paragraph!), is “Mummy go away!” This is most often heard when Mummy has been woken by shouting and hauled herself out of bed, with not a hope of a lay-in, to go and get the ungrateful little darling out of her cot for breakfast! And the toddler has decided that only Daddy will do that day. But Daddy is in the shower/in the loo/pretending to still be asleep!

Although I know it’s normal for toddlers go through this stage of negativity as they start to assert their independence, it has got me thinking about how we can do more to positively encourage her (probably a whole new blog post!). I’m increasingly aware of how often we say ‘no’ to her and I’m trying to make more effort to explain things differently when she does something we’d rather she didn’t. I say trying because can be it is so hard at times!

So Little Miss has been two for all of a week and is certainly testing the boundaries more now. Wish us luck!

Word of the Week #13

There can only be one word for this week and that is:

Word of the Week - Birthdays

Little Miss is two today! Then on Sunday the celebrations continue with my birthday. I was tempted to say ‘commiserations’ but I’ll try not to be over dramatic. I will officially be entering *whispers it* my mid-thirties. Trying not to think too much about those particular numbers!

Back to the main event and right now I don’t feel too traumatised about Little Miss growing up. I thought I might but at the moment I’m just looking forward to enjoying a lovely day together and giving her lots of birthday cuddles. Earlier in the week I wrote a post reflecting back on the last two wonderful years. As I wrote then, my beautiful little girl, without a doubt, was, is and always will be my best ever birthday present. You can read that post here – it was quite an emotional one to write and even gave my husband a lump in his throat when he read it, which I think is a compliment!

And in the future this week will be even busier for birthday celebrations, as our new nephew arrived on Monday. We went to see the latest member of the family yesterday and you really do forget how tiny newborn babies are! It was quite strange to think that this time almost two years ago Little Miss was even smaller than he is.

Ah well, I’d better dash as we’ve got birthday celebrations to get started!
